Anybody can lead, but it takes a truly exceptional person to lead effectively. As a leader, you are entrusted with the task of preparing a team for “battle,” driving the team through the “trenches” and eventually leading the team to ultimate victory.

A lot of responsibility rests on the shoulders of a leader, and unfortunately, many “leaders” fail to
meet them. The thing is that being a great leader isn’t just about getting the work done — it’s about standing up for the principles of great leadership:

  • Appearance
  • Moral Standards
  • Resolve
  • Dependability
  • Stamina
  • Vigor
  • Loyalty
  • Altruism
  • People Skills

Appearance

Appearance matters, but more-so with leaders than regular employees. It matters that you dress well, but really, appearances are more than just about clothes. It’s about how you carry yourself. Do you wobble about in a drunken stupor, or do you march through your office with poise, confidence and meaning?

Moral Standards

People respect leaders who stand up for proper values like honesty and respect. It therefore would serve your interests best to stand for these values yourself. You must commit yourself from day one to not only always do the right thing, but also to always do the right thing for the right reasons.

Resolve

As a leader, you must be ready to make decisions — a lot of them! Not only that, but you must learn to practice consistency with the decisions you make. You can’t wildly change course all the time like a fickle child. You have to make tough decisions, live with the decisions you make and be prepared to make even more decisions.

Dependability

While you will be dependent on your employees to do a good job, they will be dependent on you to lead. You must be ready to perform the duties expected of you, and added to that, you must be prepared to be concerned with the welfare of your staff. This means monitoring their progress and doing your best to help them succeed.

Stamina

To be the best leader, you must dedicate yourself to long-term endurance and stamina. This means being patient enough to design and implement long-term plans for your organization. It also means being patient with your employees, some of whom may struggle and need your help to improve.

Vigor

The best leaders enjoy leading, and it shows in their demeanor. They radiate enthusiasm and energy, both of which rub off on their employees. It inspires others to take them more seriously, and it also motivates them to try to do a better job. Ultimately, if you care about your work, your employees will care as well.

Loyalty

Being a topnotch leader requires being loyal to both your staff and your organization. The tricky part about loyalty is that it can’t be bought. You can only earn it, and you can only earn it by being loyal yourself. If you don’t exude loyalty and sincerity with your employees, there’s no reason to expect them to do the same with you.

Altruism

One of the toughest aspects of good leadership is the notion of altruism. The best leaders place their subordinates and organization above their own needs and desires. This means taking the blame when things go wrong. This also means letting your team cherish the praise when things go right.

People Skills

A leader without good people skills and tact isn’t apt to stay leader for long. You need to learn how to communicate effectively with your followers. You must also be ready to be honest and caring. Being a dismissive jerk won’t earn you any points in the leadership game.
